Some days...I don't feel productive at all...even though I do at least a little work Every day! Yesterday, I made all these plans for work I would do today but I woke up this morning kinda late and feeling reluctant to touch the works I have in progress. I know from experience that, if I work while feeling this way, I will screw something up. So I spent the day on tasks that didn't require much thought. I put a second layer of gesso on a new canvas, cleaned (then made a mess), organized ( sorta) and, painted paper. I needed some red-violets! LOL!
I did something else too.
I made a couple extra of these small "warm up" collages I've been doing. I'd been making them for a long time now but never saved any until recently.
I use limited color palettes and basic geometric shapes. I make these for 2 important reasons.
1) I teach workshops to young people. I think it's easier to build confidence in their collage skills if I show them how Anything can be built using basic geometric shapes. The more I Practice this myself, the easier it is to explain and demonstrate to a class of 30 4th graders.
2) I think a lot about how color and color combinations provoke certain emotions in the viewer. Using limited color palettes and basic shapes, I'm free to focus more on the impact of specific colors and color contrasts
.
Anyway, Let me show you some of what I'm talking about.
Since I've been thinking a lot about dance as an expression of Joy and Joy is a major theme in my work, all these figures are dancing!
I'm thinking about adding more detail and offering them for sale. What do you think?
Wonderful. I appreciate the honesty. Productivity looks different to everybody. For some, it's just getting out bed and that's fine. Do whatever brings you joy and happiness. Also, being able to break down your art for everybody is fantastic. Your teaching your students that you don't need to see the entire picture at first, just break it down piece by piece.
